London, 10th November 2020 – SPHERE™ by Stress Point Health, the unique digital therapy app designed to directly address the mind’s emotional response to stress, anxiety or PTSD, today announces that it will offer all users free access to the app during the second lockdown. The app has also moved from public Beta to full launch and is now also available for iOS.

The innovative app digitises Neurofeedback and offers access to this treatment for the first time through smartphone technology – providing acute relief in one, 20-minute session, in a cost effective and accessible way. SPHERE’s Beta launch saw almost 200 users downloading the app over the period of the past 8 months; the majority of users were based in the UK (70-80%), female (60%), and 35-44 years old (29%). The results highlighted the effectiveness of digitised neurofeedback as a means to acutely treat anxiety, stress and PTSD, over a period of time from the comfort and privacy of their home. Specifically, results showed that:

  • 86% showed a drop of 4 or more on the anxiety scale
  • 79% felt PGIC improvement (Patient Global Impression of Change)
  • 74% reported an immediate reduction in anxiety
  • 50% felt ‘very much improved’, the highest rating they can give
  • 41% felt no anxiety at all by the end of the session

Sheena Pirbhai, CEO and Founder commented: “The WHO has called stress the ‘health pandemic of the 21st century’, and it truly is; the uptick in our users shows the need for solutions to help adults

treat mental health issues, which is accelerated by the COVID-19 lockdown.  Self-isolation means access to treatment is restricted by location – where you live defines your ability to receive treatment, and this is impacting heavily on rural areas. Adding to that, NHS waiting times are increasing, putting more pressure on GPs and social services.

We need to remember that access to mental health treatment is a human right – not a privilege – and consider how we can collectively help tackle the strain on the NHS, both in terms of cost and long waiting times, exacerbated by COVID-19. By offering an effective and accessible option for people affected by mental health issues at the cost of an NHS prescription, we can help lower the barriers to mental health treatment. Going one step further – free access to our app for everyone means that people can get the support they need, when they need it, to deal with the impact of the lockdown on their mental health”.

Dan Stevens, CTO and Cofounder, added: “Coming out of our public Beta and launching our full version means that we can reach more people in need of mental health treatment. By leveraging our free offer, users will be able to access digitised neurofeedback treatment, available for the first time ever through an app, and get acute relief from the first session.

The app can help users treat the underlying cause, not the symptoms as the brain will automatically adapt to a new healthier pattern over time – without the continued reliance on external stimuli or medication. By leveraging technology to improve people’s mental health and wellbeing, we can ultimately create a happier, more productive and engaged society.”

To get access to the app for free, users can sign up on the website at any point during the second lockdown here. The app is available to download for Android and iOS.

Notes to editors:

  • SPHERE’s public Beta test ran over 8 months (March – October 2020), with 202 users downloading the app and 139 total users registering for the sessions.
  • Users could access two free sessions, 7 days apart, through their smartphone.
